Off of Gareth Emery‘s Garuda Records, comes a new EP from London based DJ Ben Gold. Like all good DJs, Ben Gold shows tremendous musical diversity for just a two song EP. Both songs certainly fall into the genre of Trance, however, they are different enough to showcase just how talented Ben is.
‘Why Not’ is a harder song than most other trance songs. Ben seems to have adopted a grittier sound and in your face bass that is more typical of house. However, this certainly does not detract from the track, ‘Why Not’ is a phenomenal fusion of genres that seems to be popular in the last couple months. Au5 has been doing it with his flirtation with dubstep, and now Ben seems to be doing the same with house. We certainly love to see DJ’s branch out and look to push the envelope.
However, the Magnum Opus of this EP is most certainly the second track: Mesocyclone. Just like its namesake, Mesocyclone hits hard and fast, leaving you slack-jawed after you experience it. The track blurs the line between Progressive House and Trance with an ethereal vocal sample pervading the song, Mesocyclone is certainly a beautiful track. However, it also is an absolutely phenomenal dance track. Armin van Buuren seems to agree with us, after all, he supported the track on A State of Trance 603.
In short, Mesocyclone is one the best Trance tracks released this year. If you’re even a slight fan of Trance music, you owe it to yourself to pick this release up.
