The entire Electronica Oasis crew ventured to see Deadmau5 at Roseland Ballroom this past Friday, and it was truly a spectacle. Last years review of his October stint in NYC was wildly successful, so I deemed it necessary to follow it up. This year, the mau5man played a record-breaking 6 show run at the legendary venue, and every show was well-recieved. Openers included Alex English, RekLes, Feed Me, and Excision which was a very cool way to start each show.

Anyways, some people were upset at the length of Deadmau5′s set, which is understandable, but it is important to consider the production aspect behind each show. His show is completely live, but his visuals that appear on the cube and large display are synched and cued up with tracks. The ‘Unhooked’ show from last year (which I reviewed HERE) was a bit different in that he could play more tracks, which added to the set length. Nonetheless, opening with ‘Where Are My Keys’ was epic. Droping ‘Slip’ and ‘Some Chords’ made the place absolutely erupt, and the encore which included ‘Limit Break’, ‘Animal Rights’ and ‘Strobe’ was one of the most absurd things I have ever seen/heard. Here is a mix of the tracks played! Please click ‘Read More’ for some cool videos and a complete set list!

Unfortunately I missed Feed Me’s opening set, but I was able to catch Excision. I am not the biggest dubstep fan, so I was not entirely impressed with the music. However, I was impressed with the sound quality at Roseland Ballroom and how much better the show was run than last years. Deadmau5′s set flowed perfectly and was put together extremely well. It is my understanding that he pretty much used the same set set list for all 6 gigs, so I am glad I only went to one show! Anyways, here is the set list from my show. The encore truly blew me away. ‘Strobe’ is arguably the best electronic dance music production of our generation. It is Prydz-like with regards to composition, and mastered and mixed to perfection. It sounds great anywhere, and to end with such a track is just epic on all counts.

I saw him on sunday, and while the show was amazing, I will never buy tickets to a 16+ show again. I felt like i was at someone’s sweet 16 and felt that the vibe was very off because of it. I thought excision and deadmau5 did an amazing job, and the visuals were great, but disrespectful teeny boppers who can’t handle their alcohol/drugs was definitely a downer.
