Electric Zoo Festival 2012: What You Need to Know – Saturday: Main Stage

Well isn’t this stage just a diverse mess of awesomeness? In this line-up what you are essentially seeing is a marathon b2b trance and progressive set with some of the heaviest hitters in each game. Just take a look at the names and drink it all in and know that you’ll be in for a treat at this year’s iteration of Electric Zoo. Of course, the only issues you will run into at any main stage at a festival are the kids who just started listening to house music on KTU like, yesterday, and inevitably sing along to every remixed pop song and David Guetta track. That being said, there are some acts that you simply would be remiss to ignore on this stage. Given that this is EZF also, you don’t have to deal with the massive clots of humans that one would find at say, Ultra, which makes this a main stage that you can manage with ease. Check out the past posts for each EZF stage and check out which artists you can’t (and can) miss after the jump!

Friday: Sunday School Grove (Vagabundos)
The Basics & Friday: Main Stage
Friday: Hilltop Arena (Group Therapy)
-Friday: Riverside (Fools Gold Clubhouse)

Who You Can’t Miss

Sander van Doorn – Duhhhh. Sander is a master of emotive music. His fanbase is versatile, a stellar reflection upon his production prowess. At Ultra he was in the ASOT tent, but for NYC’s house music festival he is retaining a coveted spot on the main stage. Recently Sander has been collaborating with a youngster by the name of Julian Jordan and hopefully we will hear a few of the baby genius’s tracks (including their just released collaboration ‘Kangaroo‘) blaring from the prolific speakers. Get ready for this Dutch can’t miss with his old school track versus British pop star Robbie Williams ‘Close My Eyes.’

Above & Beyond – Okay, so this is also a duh, but perhaps not really because if you’re a true member of the trance family you will be in their Group Therapy tent on Friday and thus likely annoyed by the n00bs wreaking havoc at the main stage on Saturday. That being said, if you can’t get off Friday and you want to get your feet wet, you MUST check out Above & Beyond. The British trance trio (Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness and Paavo Siljamäki) have been in the game since you were probably still in elementary school and they have honed their craft. Moreover, they are RARELY in NYC and EZF is the only time they will be doing their Group Therapy show that they have been traveling across North America with.

Under The Radar Performer

Eco – It’s an imperative to support the hometown hero. Eco is a Jersey kid and a deeply rooted trance addict and producer. Despite being young, he has been in the production/DJ scene since the days of vinyl and he has the pedigree to prove it. He is Armada supported and recently released a compilation ‘Constellations In You‘ via the premier trance label started by godfather Armin van Buuren. Get an education in classic trance from Eco as he will inevitably wow the crowds at the main stage. They won’t know what hit them.

Who You Can Pass On

Nervo – Okay, before everyone gets up in arms about passing up on ‘such talented producers’ etc. etc. be honest with yourself. Do you want to see these hopefully attractive Aussie twins DJ because you adore their tracks, or because they’re just plain hot? Either one is okay, but when there is so much good music of different genres being put forth during EZF we’d rather spend our time elsewhere. Nervo does have a sick track with Hook N Sling in the hopper, but we promise you will heard ‘Reason’ elsewhere at some point during the three day festival. No sense lingering around waiting for it from the Nervo sisters.

What We Want to Hear

Bingo Players – Rattle

ECO ECO ECO!! The guy plays trance how it should be played. Not just throwing on the top jams of the day, his sets have an actual flow and progression. Not to be missed! Real shame Nilsen bailed as well.

    “…these hopefully attractive Aussie twins…”
you can definitely delete the “hopefully”, no doubt about that one.

And next to the ECO comment above (trancindance gets that right!), Kyau & Albert are worth checking out.
They did a great set at Pacha earlier this year (and Pacha was surprisingly roomy too, so many missed it).

    oh one more thing:

    please indulge the nooby kids:
there are so few U18 (even U21) places they can go hear the music.
And during our deserved annoyance, we sometimes forget that we were just like that once too! For many reading here, not even that long ago.

putting a longer perspective on it: A & B were in elementary school when I was that annoying noob (back when molly was just a girl), sorry
