I know we usually assign tracks the credit ‘Song of the Summer,’ but we feel Glasgow-based DJ and producer Harvey McKay‘s track ‘Silk Road’ deserves the accolade ‘Song of the Winter.’ We’ve heard this one everywhere techno is heard, along with some special support from Drumcode label boss Adam Beyer. McKay’s EP, ‘The Illusion of Control,’ is out today and features this track first. There’s something about ‘Silk Road’ that brings us to new techno heights and fills a void in the genre that needed a combination of catchy soul and an edge of danger. ‘Silk Road’ takes us there.
The second track, ‘Slip,’ takes it down a notch and is a suitable middle track but not a stand-out on its own. The final track on the EP, ‘Start Running,’ continues the almost menacing tone where ‘Silk Road’ left off, complete with spaced-out voices in the background and a crunchy, grinding base line. With this EP, McKay is just testing the techno waters and we expect a lot more to come.
