REVIEW: Bob Sinclar Funkifies Lavo

How I love Lavo Thursdays. I would say that weekly I endure a mental struggle between: should I go see one of the best DJs in the world spin at an intimate club, or should I be good and not be hungover at work tomorrow? In most cases the former wins and I rarely regret it. Since its inception a bit over a year ago, Lavo has consistently brought in top talent that has given the spot a reputation as one of the best places to indulge in house music in the city. From Chuckie to Dada Life to Afrojack, a vast number of EDM stars who make it to NYC find their way to the DJ booth at Lavo. I’m certainly not complaining.

Last Thursday I headed to Midtown to check out Bob Sinclar, who may be one of the more recognizable names in EDM because of his genre crossing ways and megahits such as “World Hold On” which even my 13 year old cousin knows. His reggae and EDM bending tracks are catchy, danceable and likable by most everyone. His set at Lavo featured mostly his vast discography, to no disappointment.

With the holidays making it a strange week for nightlife, Thursday still brought a packed house at Lavo with hoards of hopeful patrons crowding the door outside despite the rain. Inside the party was on as local NY DJ Steve Powers warmed up the crowd prior to Sinclar coming on around 1:30. He spun a deep breadth of tracks, from the beloved New New New to a mashup of Bob Sinclar – Peace Song vs Benny Bennassi – Satisfaction to a Swedish House Mafia medley of Antidote vs. Miami 2 Ibiza.

There is really nothing better than an underground lair dedicated to the worship of house music, which is the only way that I can describe Lavo. I never have a bad time and the music and crowd is always amazing. What more can you really ask for? If not for familial obligations I would have been there to see Dash Berlin on Christmas Eve, but sometimes a line in the sand must be drawn, unfortunately.
