So over the past few weeks, J-Brown and I have been working together on these Throwback Thursday’s. What makes this particular week’s post so unique was J-Brown’s first statement about ‘Heartbreaker’, “I can safely say that Laidback Luke’s remix of MSTRKRFT’s masterpiece (nice pun there) was the reason why my alma mater began to embrace house music.” This is not only true for his school and my own, but in all likelihood for several others across the country.
The original is phenomenal and shows JFK and Al-P (of MSTRKRFT), departing from their usual styles of that dope glitchy electro, or their newer sound, which in my mind is still hard to classify (‘Beards Again‘?). The “masterpiece” features amazing vocals from John Legend, the catchiest distorted piano hook, and lets not forget two of the biggest names in EDM put their own twist on this massive tune.
Both the Laidback Luke & Wolfgang Gartner remixes could be classified in electro house, but what makes LBL’s so unique is his instrumental into vocals order are reversed as he begins with just an acapella of the vocals. His breakdown is definitely shades more on the electro side of things where Wolfgang’s is bit more progressive. ‘Heartbreaker’ was an all around great original and it featured an even more impressive remix package.
